STEROID AND DRUG ABUSE

 What are steroids, Anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids as drug abuse.

Steroids are compounds which have tetracyclic nucleus. VitaminD, cardiac glycosides , steroidal antibiotics are steroids. Steroids hormones include estrogens, progestogens, androgens and corticosteroids.

Anabolic Steroids: Anabolic Steroids are compounds which increase protein synthesis and muscle development. Testosterone is the anabolic steroid which increase muscle development in human body. Nandrolone is also anabolic steroid which also increase protein synthesis and muscle development.

Anabolic steroids are used in therapy of aplastic anemia but these are abused by many people for bodybuilding and athletes to enhance sporting performance

Unwanted side effects of Anabolic Steroids:

Jaundice
Liver disease
Coronary heart disease

Drug Abuse: Drug abuse is defined as when drug is not used for medicinal purposes , drug is used for non-medicinal purpose like create pleasurable effect. Drug abuse affect person's physical, mental and social life.

Anabolic steroids as Drug abuse:

Anabolic steroids are abused by many athletes to enhance athletic performance. The use of anabolic steroids is officially prohibited. The World Anti-dopping agency publishes an annually updated list of prohibited substances that may not by sportsperson. Drug testing can be done to check drug abuse as per strict protocol by analysis of blood samples and urine samples. Chemical analysis like gas chromatography and mass spectrometry are used.

Anabolic steroids like Testosterone, Nandrolone increased muscle development and aggression. These steroid can be detected in human body via urine or blood samples.

Side effects: Liver disease, jaundice, liver failure
